Greenpeace International (GPI) is looking for a full-time Internal Communication Specialist to provide communication support via written content and strategic advice in the Executive Director’s Office (EDO). This role will be a 12-month fixed term contract and reports to the Director of the Executive Director’s Office (DEDO), working very closely with the International Executive Director (IED).

The successful candidate may be based in a country where one of the independent national/regional Greenpeace organisations (NROs) is located (subject to agreement). Please find here the various locations.

Purpose of the job

To provide communication support via written content and strategic advice. Design and deliver an engagement strategy to support all activities of the IED and EDO, emphasising conversation and connection to increase awareness and co-powering with staff at GPI and globally around key events and initiatives.

Main tasks/responsibilities

1. Strategy and Engagement Development

Develop a communication strategy to increase interaction between IED/SMT and GPI staff in order to increase awareness and empowerment of staff and GPI globally around events and key initiatives. 

Create a multi-faceted approach to IED engagement, incorporating a variety of communication outlets and styles. Working with IED External Comms, and other internal comms efforts (Story and Comms, Global Programme Office etc) monitor IED involvement in other communication strategies to ensure a complementary approach. Develop KPIs and communication metrics to understand engagement and to inform future strategy involving relevant stakeholders.

2. Internal Communication Outputs, IED Engagement

Deliver the above communication strategy, developing communication material and creating engagement opportunities. Draft all IED/DEDO communication to GPI staff and also the global organization. Examples of tasks would be:

  • Draft push communications from the IED (editorials, vlogs, staff meeting communiques)
  • Draft ad-hoc emails to GPI staff from the IED as and when required 
  • Planning and preparing the IED for informal meetings with GPI staff as well as appearances at GPI events and activities

3. Internal Communication Outputs (Project-based)

Provide internal communications strategy and support for key internal initiatives and events. Emphasis should be on clear, consistent, relevant and meaningful language and engagement. 

This may include, but is not limited to, content for the following projects:

  • EDM and AGM (Dates TBC)
  • GPI Three-Year Strategic Plan
  • Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Plan
  • GPI Equity, Diversity and Inclusion 

4. Enable Stakeholders and Manage Relationships

Continually develop and maintain a positive working relationship with colleagues, peers and other internal stakeholders, in order to ensure a sustainable and accessible network that aligns with the core values and our mission and vision.

5. GPI and Global Staff Engagement 

Ensure an open, inclusive and involved communication climate among GPI staff through implementation of various one-way and two-way communication material and organisation of staff engagement events. 

Examples of this would be:

  • Monthly Global newsletter 
  • Monthly GPI staff meetings (including facilitation of staff meeting)
  • Organizing staff social events (eg. Book Clubs, Yoga Classes, etc.)

Skills required / qualifications

  • At least 5 years professional experience in internal communications
  • Knowledge of organisational development, business planning, change management and employee engagement strategies
  • Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and ability to collaborate with cross-cultural teams
  • Ability to draw together information from a number of complex sources and turn it into clear, accurate and easily comprehensible internal communication
  • Articulate, creative and passionate, with excellent written and editorial skills in English
  • Experience in project management
  • Ability to work independently and in project teams
  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects to meet tight deadlines
  • Digitally literate: Good skills working with digital tools and online systems; willing and able to learn new ones.
  • Data informed: Comfortable using data insights when taking decisions.
