Greenpeace International is looking for an engaging and committed Chief Operating Officer to have oversight over all internal ongoing organisational issues. While the International Executive Director (IED) is concerned with long-term strategic organisational goals and higher risk situations, the Chief Operating Officer is tasked with implementing daily organisational operations, aligned with Greenpeace International's goals and strategies.
This is a full time (40 hour per week) position offered for 1 year initially with the strong possibility of extension and you will be based in Amsterdam where you will be working closely with the IED, Finance Director, Director of the EDO, People & Culture Director and General Counsel, as well as stakeholders from across the global network present in 55 countries.
Your duties will include (but are not limited to):
- Driving the collective coherence of key organisational and internal strategies in the global network, while ensuring that these strategies are being developed and implemented in a collaborative and effective manner - promoting excellence and holding each Director accountable for the development and implementation thereof.
- Managing and driving cross-functional initiatives that will build relationships between departments to enhance information flow, quality of systems, reporting, and problem solving. This entails acting as a change agent by implementing new initiatives, improving current processes, and utilising methods that will sustain the change.
- Leading and managing Directors and Unit Heads individually, and as a team, to ensure the effective performance through objective setting, performance reviews, staff coaching, development and training to achieve the objectives of the Greenpeace International strategy. Deputising (upon request and due to unforeseen circumstances) on behalf of the International Executive Director.
- Heading the directors of the Finance, People & Culture and IT departments to ensure the implementation of high quality systems, appropriate structures and culture change that are aligned to the organisational strategy and are focused in the same direction.
- Overseeing daily operations by providing day-to-day leadership and management that mirrors the mission and values of Greenpeace, including oversight for budget and development activities and driving organisational transformation/efficiencies, thereby maintaining responsibility for ensuring that these processes are moving forward effectively, efficiently, and in an integrated fashion.
- Exploring ways to make processes more agile and adaptive, reducing non-essential bureaucracy as much as possible and ensuring the oversight of day-to-day organisational risk management, collaborating with Strategy & Management Team (SMT) and consulting and informing the IED as needed.
- Building excellent working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders both internally and in the global Greenpeace network, members of the Strategy & Management Team (SMT), and other Chief Operating Officers in National Regional Organisations.
- Overseeing any change management processes at GPI in a way consistent with GP values and policies.
- Analysing and synthesising data and metrics, in the form of reports (financial, staffing, technological, etc.) to provide oversight which will support strategic and good management decisions. Additionally measuring the effectiveness of existing cross-functional processes while looking for opportunities for efficiency and overseeing software solution integrations to improve proficiency, quality, and content of data and reporting.

What we are looking for:
- More than 10 years of relevant working experience, of which minimal 8 years relevant senior strategic management- leadership experience in international/ global organisation.
- Experience with strategic and financial planning in the main organisational areas (finance, human resources, IT).
- Experience in executing Strategy plans into the daily practice.
- Proven ability to identify organisational and strategic gaps and offer creative solutions for problems large and small.
- Strong leadership and team building skills and experience of leading and stimulating communities of practice; knows when to lead and when to follow.
- Proven ability in leading and setting up systems for data as well as synthesising and interpreting data and metrics in order to support conclusions by providing evidence for decision making.
- Captivating communicator; can communicate complexity simply and translate the universal to the individual and vice versa, both written and verbal.
- Proven change management experience in a complex global network with multiple cultures.
- Experience identifying organisational risk management from different perspectives.
- Demonstrated familiarity with financial management and human resources (people & culture).
- Proven experience with troubleshooting that includes a logical, systematic search for the source of a problem in order to solve it and make the product or process operational again.
- Excellent command of English; a good knowledge of other languages (is a pre).
